Ancient Sparta – the true story of the city of Leon
The ancient Spartans
Ancient Sparta is a name that all the world knows and recognizes. The bravery of Leonidas and the 300 are the basis heroic countless Hollywood movies. The betrayal of Menelaos, by the beautiful Helen of Troy, is enshrined in myth and glorious Homeric legend. Documentaries and books represent the brutal military regime and ignoble practice exposing children weak in the rugged mountains of Taygetus.
Like all rooms in the modern city will tell you, the reality of Spartan society De was quite different from the modern perception. Society of ancient Sparta was surprisingly complex, their culture as rich as any other city in ancient Greece.
BEGINNING
Surprisingly to some, the history of the ancient Spartans begins not by the Homeric Trojan War. The kingdom of Menelaus and Helen was almost a century before the dawn of history ancient Sparta. It was of an ancient civilization, semi-mythical, even the Dorian Spartans of Leonidas. Some authorities believe that the kingdom Menelaus drew near Lakedaimon known Pellans of age, Sparta.
The excavations are being made, but have yet to find concrete evidence of a palace. History of Sparta, Leonidas begins with Greek Doric invasion. The migration of tribes in northeastern Greece rejected the "long-haired Greeks' Achaeans of Homeric legend.
The emergence of ancient Sparta began around 750 BC, when the Spartan state systematically subjected populations emerging from the surrounding areas. Neighbors Amyclae was incorporated in the four institutions Parents and Messinia was invaded, the people enslaved as serfs. They were not slaves, but had few rights and were forced to cultivate the land, giving half the proceeds to Sparta.
The lands of Messinia were fragmented at Spartan Warrior-citizens known as Spartans. During this period, Sparta's Constitution was formulated, and the state elected two kings, ruling alongside a council of elders and demos of the male citizens. Helots and inhabitants of peripheral areas, the Perioeci, was denied a vote. This is very similar to "democracy" of Athens, where only the richest men had a right to vote.
The rise of ancient Sparta
Between 680 and 660 BC, the Spartan army adopted the hoplite method of fighting, which became the mainstay of their tactics for many centuries. In 669, the army has suffered a setback against the Argives neighbors, and had to make a revolt in Messenia, in the 650's. However, further reform and rebellion was crushed in ten years. Finally, Messinia was completely conquered and Sparta began to look beyond.
The famous laws of Lycurgus were designed to stabilize the company and is printed on the psyche of all Spartans. Military training became compulsory for all male citizens of the age of seven, their lives were dictated by unbreakable rules. Messinia Helots provided food, and became artisans Perekoi and merchants, ancient Sparta, the establishment of a professional army. The training and hardening, the beatings, austere conditions and a selection rigid, leading to a highly skilled workforce and dedicated elite fighting only to the law.
The whole system discourages the collection of wealth in few hands, avoid the serious imbalances that could lead to tyranny, coups or riots. The use of professional troops, against other hoplites time Greek states, was the important factor in the increasing dominance of Sparta. By the mid-6th century, the ancient Sparta had conquered its neighbors near and has been the dominant power in the Peloponnesian League, a key player in Greek politics.
PERSIAN EXPANSION
Throughout the sixth century BC, the Persian empire has developed gradually. Starting as a confederation of tribes in modern Iran, grew and dominated the Middle and Near East. The cities of Babylon, Memphis and Susa, fell into the well equipped and well trained army of Cyrus the Great. In 512, the new king Darius, overran the Greek cities of Asia Minor and began to influence his policy.
After a failed uprising in 494 of these cities, King Xerxes of Persia decided to punish the Greeks, especially the Athenians, the main supporters of this revolt Ionian. Xerxes invaded, but the battle of Marathon saw defeat at the hands of the Athenians and their allies. Ancient Sparta declined to send an army to their ceremonies were more religious, which won the battle.
480 BC C. saw the top of Spartan history, the Battle of Thermopylae, a name that has resonated throughout history. Despite the overestimation of future issues in the Persian Gulf and the underestimation of the Greek figures, it is still an act of unwavering courage. Thermopylae was an impressive display of Spartan prowess, courage and strength.
The Persian king, Xerxes, when his invasion to coincide with religious festivals, which prevents that many of the Greek cities of sending armies. However, States have sent small contingents, including the famous 300 Spartans under Leonidas, General in general. The Greek forces probably number around 7000, and the Persian force of up to 250 000 men, a difference in strength.
After four days waiting for the Greeks to accept terms and disperse, Xerxes sent its first contingent of troops, demanding annihilation of the Greeks. Here is your plan failed, channeled his army camp on a narrow front and neutralizing the effect of the numbers. Advanced training and morale of the former Spartan phalanxes held Hot Gates, and the original attack has been cut into pieces. The next day, a storm of 10 000 elite immortals, but were forced back, in shame.
The course of the battle now turned against the Greek forces. The infamous traitor, Ephialtes, led a force of 40 000 Persians along a goat path, bringing them near the rear of the Greeks. The protection force of 1,000 Phoenicians fled, and the encirclement of the advance force is almost complete. Learning this, Leonidas dismissed the Greek allies, leaving only the 300 Spartans, 900 Helots of Messenia and 700 volunteers who dances. They last on a hill in the back of the neck until dead by a man and general inspiration for centuries.
A year later, at Plataea 10 000 ancient warriors of Sparta, part of a force of about 45 000 hoplites, and an unknown number of light troops, defeated a huge Persian army. This, with the victory of the Athenian fleet at the Battle of Salamis, the Persian hopes crushed forever. Never again invaded Greece and its emphasis has been put to use his wealth and prestige to influence Greek politics.
The Peloponnesian Wars
The end of the V century BC, the fragile alliance between ancient Athens and Sparta, the two major powers in Greece, accident. Initially, there was no outright declaration war, but the two states of the city began to play the political game, disputes and manipulation of their allies. Athens put pressure on the city of Corinth and its colonies in Sicily, establishing its own outposts on the island. Corinth, alarmed, turned to Sparta for aid, and threatened to leave the Peloponnesian League.
The Athenians also conspired against another city, Megara, near Corinth, by restricting their rights to trade in Athens. Pressure built and blew war, becoming a battle of attrition. Despite initial resistance superior Spartan armies, the walls of strong defense and powerful fleet of Athens forced an impasse.
In 421 BC C. both cities felt the tension in the box and armies. A fragile truce has been called, which lasted until 415, when the Athenians suffered a major defeat in trying to conquer Sicily. However, ancient Sparta could not take advantage of this investment and peace offered again. This was accepted and lasted until 404 BC C.. For a time, Sparta was the dominant force in the eastern Mediterranean, but never fully exploited its position.
Persian Gold equipped a new fleet of Sparta, which crushed the Athenian fleet in the Hellespont. Athens had no choice but to surrender, and the Spartan conditions were harsh. Athens has had to reduce their walls and destroy his fleet.
