Mineral question about mohs hardness scale !!?
ok, well my class is doing a project on minerals and im assigned amethyst. its rated a 7 on mohs hardness scale, and glass is rated a 6-7. i want to know if glass can scratch amethyst
Generally, glass cannot scratch Amethyst due to it’s lower Mohs rating.
But, there are scratches and then there is scratch-like damage. The latter could indeed be the result of glass. Polishing a gemstone leaves microscopic ridges on the facet surface. When something of lesser, yet significant hardness is “scratched” across a facet, a mechanical fracture of the ridges is possible. It’s more like a line of mechanical abrasion.
