Black and white on a zebra’s coat
exist together while we float
in a sea of hate and xenophobia
terrorism and apartheid
we live in a spectrum
or maybe a multicolored mosaic floor
in the midst of the red mists of anger, bloodshed, and love
in the greenery of envy and money and trees
and we yellow with age, chemical smog and sunshine
or the lack of it
absorbed in the blue of self pity, copper sulfate and the sky
the pink of health, artificially colored candy, and roses
the purple of amethysts, eggplants and the stage poison
used in the middle school play
the colors change like traffic lights
still we dream of peace
in black and white.
