Assorted questions about travel to Italy?
I am planning on going to Italy April or May of 2010. What is a great travel book to buy? I will stay with friends for a few nights in Vicenza, then book a hotel in Rome. Is there a train pass that I should buy before I go? Is there a bus pass you can buy as well? What’s the best web site to use when booking a flight? I would love to get a great price on a round trip ticket out of California. Any hints or advice for this new time over seas traveler would be welcomed! Grazie!
The most popular Rome tour guide with tourists (by far) is Rick Steves Rome http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/astore.html and then the Eyewitness Rome guide (I chat a lot with Rome tourists, online and off).
I personally prefer the Eyewitness guide because of the attention to detail, the great maps and the way they divide each area into little manageable pieces – but then my perspective is different to that of the tourist.
Buses are generally not a good travel option in Italy – they can be quite uncomfortable, little space.
Trains cost about the same as the buses, are much quicker (not the inter-regional) and infinitely more spacious – trains are the way to go!
You can book with the State’s railway “Ferrovia dello Stato”, this is the English link http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html (also known as Trenitalia).
Sometimes they offer discounts if you book in advance – it’s advisable to book at least a few days in advance especially from May to September.

For getting cheap flights to Rome and Italy it’s best to use a flight search engine that checks and compares hundreds of airlines and routes and then returns the best prices. As long as you are a little flexible with times and stop-overs you should find some excellent deals.
