CAN FISH AND CRYSTAL BE IN THE SAME TANK?
i would like to put my collection of gemstones cluster (minerals) such as….amethyst, quartz, emerald, azurite, etc… in my 72g tank. my concern would be water contamination (if any). what are the safe crystals that would not be poison the my fish? thank you all.
One problem I first see here is that many crystals and gemstones that haven’t been polished can be quite sharp – fish injure themselves and tear fins on sharp objects.
The stones That Are NOT safe include:
Amethyst – can contain metals, manganese and iron, the darker it is the less safe it is, not recommended.
Geodes – can contain harmful metals and minerals and are too sharp for fish.
Jade – Jadite ONLY is safe for tanks, do not use “Jade” otherwise known as Nephrite, this is unsafe.
Quartz – although water safe, is sharp and can hurt fish and scratch your tank, it will also look pretty nasty once it gets algae on it.

To be honest, I’d leave your tank more natural with genuinely safe rocks (such as granite and slate) rather than more risky gemstones.
