indoor flowering chrysanthemum?
i was recently presented by a potted hardy mum (chrysanthemum) plant with beautiful pink flowers. i want to grow it in my room. i have an east facing window with sunlight till noon. i am a novice to gardening and need tips on how to care for this plant and information about whether it is possible to keep it inside. thanks.
well it depends when u bought it did it say indoor specifically or outdoor which are mostly everywhere…
once their buds begin to show color, they will bloom as well in an office as they will in a sunny kitchen window or a hospital room. The types of mums sold as indoor blooming plants are selected for their reliability and beauty. Unfortunately, they are not as hardy as garden chrysanthemums and they are rarely successful as garden plants.
>Tips for Growing Healthy Chrysanthemums
What are the light requirements for chrysanthemums? They do best in full sun, but the flowers will last longer if they are not in direct sunlight when they are in bloom. Luckily, that means they can be used in more places where the show of their beautiful flowers can be enjoyed.
How much water do they need? Chrysanthemums should be kept evenly moist, but they must also have good drainage. Be sure to empty the saucer after it drains so the plants won’t sit in water.
Do they have any special temperature requirements? Mums can tolerate a fairly wide range of household temperatures, but will do their best if the night temperature doesn’t go below 60º. The blooms last longest if the daytime temperature is about 70º.
Do chrysanthemums need much humidity? They are more tolerant of dry air indoors than many other plants, but they prefer not to be near heat vents or cold air returns.
How much fertilizer do they require? Mums will flower well without any additional fertilizer if they are purchased already in bud. If they aren’t blooming yet, feed them every other week with a water-soluble fertilizer such as Bachman’s Excel Gro.
What type of soil do they prefer? Chrysanthemums prefer a quality potting soil such as Bachman’s Exceloam or a soil-less mix such as Hyde Park Professional Mix. Good drainage is important.
When should I repot my chrysanthemum? Because they don’t make good garden mums and they are very difficult to rebloom, there is no need to repot them. Just discard the old plant and replace it with a new one whose buds are just beginning to open. Get a different color this time for variety!
Will they need any grooming? Chrysanthemums are not hard to keep looking great. All you need to do is remove spent blooms as soon as they fade so they won’t detract from the other flowers and buds That Are just beginning to open. If the leaves begin to get a little dusty, just give the plant a gentle shower.
How are they propagated? Florist chrysanthemums are propagated by taking cuttings from non-blooming branches, rooting them in a potting medium, and manipulating light. They are difficult to keep compact without special growth retardants and they are hard to get to set buds: not a project for the indoor gardener.
Troubleshooting Problems with Chrysanthemums
Why don’t some of the buds open? Sometimes smaller buds that were not already showing color when the plant was bought will fail to open if the plant is not receiving enough light.
Why do the leaves turn black? The plant is too cold, it should not be below 60º. Another possibility is the effects of leafshine products, which should not be used on chrysanthemums.
Why are the leaves yellowing? The plant may be too wet or the humidity too high. Let the surface of the soil become dry to the touch before watering, empty the saucer as soon as the plant finishes draining and put it in a drier location.
Do chrysanthemums get bugs? Most healthy chrysanthemums resist insects, but they can occasionally be attacked by aphids, spider mites or whiteflies. When any of these is noticed, treat the plants according to the type of insect involved. Get a copy of Bachman’s Information Sheet Indoor Insect and Disease Problems.
Why do the lower leaves get gray, fuzzy and mushy? This is a fungus disease called Botrytis. It is a symptom of the plant being too cold and damp. Move it to a warmer location and allow it to dry out more before watering.
Why do some of the flowers rot on an otherwise healthy plant? This will often happen to flowers that have been sprayed. Cover the flowers your hand when you spray the plant with water or cover it with paper if you are using an insecticide. Cut off the disfigured flowers
