Many women believe that without their hair, their beauty will be lost.  We spend countless hours treating, conditioning, dyeing, and styling our hair to achieve the look that we desire.  The idea of losing our hair or having our colorful locks turn grey sends many women into an all-out panic.

So, then, why do we continue to destroy our hair on a daily basis by bathing it in chemicals?

Recently, I started using mira hair oil for my hair, an all-natural hair restructuring treatment.  With this new treatment, I started paying more attention to the chemicals that were contained in my favorite health and beauty products.  I kept seeing “sodium laureth sulfate” and “sodium lauryl sulfate” and wondered what they were.  Were these chemicals good or bad for my hair?

As it turns out, SLS and SLES are surfactants that strip our hair and scalp of natural oils, making it dry, brittle, and more prone to falling out.  Not only that, but some people believe that these chemicals are carcinogens — meaning they can contribute to cancer!  When we put chemicals on our scalp, they are easily absorbed into the body through our pores, especially when hot shower water easily opens them up.

I sorted through my hair care products and found that an astonishing amount of them contained these ingredients.  I pretty much had to purge my entire hair care line except for my mira hair oil products and a few products I had purchased at Whole Foods.  It was a costly lesson, but I now feel much better knowing that my hair won’t come into contact with SLS and SLES any longer.
