The people of Namibia
Namibia 2 is the lowest country population with a population of only 1.8 million dollars. Despite this, there many different peoples with their own cultures, languages and traditions. This makes Namibia a fascinating country to visit for a cultural trip.
Ovambo
Of the 1.8 million Namibians, some 900,000 are Ovambo. Their territory is located north of Etosha Pan, with the town of Oshakati as its center. The Ovambo are a branch of the Bantu people came here in the 16th century East Africa. Traditionally, the farmers and the relatively fertile soils of the north grow mainly maize, sorghum, millet, pumpkins, beans and melons. We also have cattle and goats.
Kavango
About 150,000 Kavango set is the former Ovamboland to the south bank Okavango. A large part of them came from Angola. The Kavango live also in agriculture and some cattle and fishing. They are excellent craftsmen and have their own language. Rundu is its center.
Caprivians
In the northeast of Namibia live some 50,000 Caprivians. Its center is Katima Mulilo. Their economy is based on livestock, agriculture and fisheries and have their own language.
Herero
The third group, with about 150,000 members, is the Herero people living mainly Central Namibia. Herero Women skirts and multicolored hair, whose shape resembles that of cow's horns, can be attributed to the influence wives of the missionaries who were not initially satisfied with the traditional dress of women saving. The proud, tall and strong Herero are fans breeders.Their Livestock Center where every year is organized Okahandja a festival in honor of their ancestors.
Himba
Closely related The Herero are about 5,000 Himba live in Kaokoland distance (50,000 square kilometers) in the north-west to the city as the center of Opuwo. The Himba still maintain their traditional life style of semi-nomadic. They speak the same language as the Herero and live off their herds of cattle. Visit a Himba people in a culture of travel.
Nama
Just south of Namibia has been traditionally inhabited by the Nama people. They are related to the Khoi-Khoi and came here from Cape. The approximately 80,000 mainly agricultural Nama with sheep and goats. They speak a dialect different sounds click Khoisan: very difficult to learn.
Damara
The Damara 90,000 speak the same language the Nama. Its main settlement area extends from the Etosha Pan Erongo with the City of Khorixas its center. The majority, however, live scattered throughout the country. The Damara cattle, and has mastered the art of forging iron and copper again.
Bushmen
Indigenous inhabitants are the Bushmen of Namibia. There signs that have lived here for as long as 20,000 years ago. The number of Bushmen still living in Namibia is estimated at 40,000. They live mainly in the west Tsumkwe, but the Bushmen are by nature and traditionally a nomadic people.
Baster
The Rehoboth Baster 25,000 live exclusively in and around Rehoboth city south of Windhoek. They are the descendants of women and immigrants in Afrikaans Khoikhoi of the Cape Colony who left in 1870 and founded Cape Rehoboth. The Baster speak Afrikaans and follow the traditions and Afrikaner culture. They mainly cattle and good craftsmen.
Whites
Per 100,000 whites (known formally as whites) living in Namibia. 20% of them are Germans, 20% are English and 60% are Afrikaans. After the war, who emigrated from South Africa IST Namibia.
