- 1. What are the details in the description of Herodotus of Nubian culture, society and geography are consistent with information provided in traditions and encounters? What details are inconsistent or contradictory?
According to Herodotus, Ethiopians were the best and greatest men who ever lived. Their habits differ greatly with those of other human beings and specifically in the way they have chosen their kings. They chose the highest and strongest of men to rule over them. The spies were informed that the kings lived 120 years or more, and because ate only cooked meat and milk. For Ethiopians, the silver was the most precious and rare. They made glass coffins which dries the body somehow and the whole body covered with plaster and decorated with painting of the body until the body of a living man. Gypsum is abundant in this area and dug to create the body and placed in a glass column. We could see the body through the pillar without any unpleasant odor and body parts were clearly visible. The body has remained in the column of glass during a full year family and has been given to fruit and also honored the sacrifice unceasingly. When last year the body in the pillar was established at a site near the city. (Robin, 1998)
2. Are parts of the strike on the account of Herodotus, is too far-fetched? If so, how do you explain these perceptions or myths?
In one case, Herodotus says that the kings lived for more than 120 years and who ate cooked meat, and milk. As the hope in of life was greater life expectancy of more than 120 years, seems far away. Herodotus, that he might have tried to describe the powers of these kings and their immortality.
In another case, Herodotus describes the painting of the sun as a meadow in the foothills town, which is boiled beef and all kinds of beasts. The meat was stored by the judges every day and night, people came to eat. This seems unlikely because the region is desert and there was a shortage of food. In saying this, Herodotus wanted to illustrate the wealth of Nubians.
3. Herodotus How information was based on personal experience? How long has relied on other sources and rumors? Is there a distinction between the two?
In excerpts from histories of Herodotus, most information is given by the experience of Herodotus himself, but in some cases, it is clear that information obtained by the spies. He said the spies had said the kings lived for over 120 years and eating cooked meat and meat. This suggests he may have obtained this information from espionage. Tests to listen is also evident when he wrote that it was said that Ethiopians were the best and tallest men in the world.
4. Based on the foregoing, consider the utility account of Herodotus history as a source? Why or why not?
Accounts of Herodotus, however, have a lot of hype and rumors are a historical source useful, and these statements have some truth, and had to be carefully analyzed, providing a wide range of aspects of Nubian life. These previews are very useful because they give to the first accounts of reality that is happening in this period are also useful because they provide the basis of secondary sources.
