The extinction of amphibians May first claim of the frog
Many of us grew up watching friendly Kermit the Frog in a television program called Sesame Street. We can certainly remember reading the story of the frog that turns into a handsome prince after receiving a kiss. However, in the Bible, frogs were certainly less endearing when he became a hideous plague facing Colombia. The first problem that began nearly two decades when biologists noticed a dramatic decline in amphibian populations. Since then, the decline has got progressively worse. Frogs are amphibians and are most valuable to humans because the insects that feed on other animals will not touch. In a world without amphibians, insects, many of them went out of control and threaten public health and food reserves. In addition, frogs serve important biomedical purposes. Some species of frogs produce a product chemical used as a painkiller for humans, while a case is still linked to a chemical that disables the virus that causes AIDS.
A list of known amphibians including endangered frogs and toads, salamanders, newts, and the little-known group of legs, worm creatures called caecilians. Caecilians are extremely ecologically useful because as predators they consume harmful insects by the millions. However, frogs are in the vanguard of the problem worldwide of amphibians, because they have already lost one hundred seventy species in the last ten years.
There have been numerous explanations sudden loss of amphibians in the past two decades. Some reasons, such as human development affect habitat, air pollution and global climate change have been presented .. However, all these reasons, could not explain the extinction Amphibians have been in the nature reserves and other relatively undisturbed lands.
It was not until that scientists discovered that the devastation of frogs and other amphibians has been caused by a fungus called chytrid that the threat from extinction of amphibians have known. The fungus is unstoppable and incurable in nature, and kills by attacking the keratin in the skin resistant layer of the animal. Since frogs use their skin to breathe and drink, we that the fungus "chokes" to death.
The fungus was discovered in Australia and Panama, ten years ago and is now reaching Europe and the Americas, causing skin infections and eventually death in every amphibian species it attacks. Following this fungus, almost one third of known species of frogs in the world today are threatened with extinction.
Consider that Australia and Panama have already lost two species of native frogs and more than half of other endangered species of extinction in Australia and frog infected by this deadly disease. Last year, Japan reported its first cases of death of frogs of the fungus, prompting to research groups to declare an emergency in this country. On the Caribbean island of Dominica, the fungus has almost wiped out the mountain chicken, a species frog considered an island delicacy. Meanwhile Frog, mountain yellow-legged has almost disappeared from Yellowstone National Park.
The fate of amphibians from frog and others has led to the development of a proposed $ 500 million requested The Amphibian Ark project hopes to recruit five hundred zoos, botanical gardens, aquariums, universities and other institutions in the world to support at least one species of the class of amphibians. To raise awareness in danger of extinction in the frog, zoos and conservatories around the world have been the class of 2008 as Year of the Frog ".
Each Zoo involved in the project shall own all amphibians to ensure that the fungus does not in the protected population, then isolated population. The idea is to retrieve the members of each of around 6,000 the remaining amphibian species until science has found a way to stop the spread of the fungus in nature. Once the fungus has been controlled, the zoo released slowly frogs, salamanders and other amphibians in their natural habitat.
Amphibian Ark director Kevin Zipple, called the program "the largest conservation project that mankind is always trying to control. "This project is really a race against time to save amphibians, frogs and others of the plight of the Dodo bird and the dinosaur.
