Jade Gem stone?
Why is it considered lucky. What is the usual price for a good to medium quality stone say for a dress ring?
Jade was considered (by the ancient Chinese) to protect their bodies from marauding demons, this is why there were chinese burial suits made of over 4000 jade plaques sewn together with gold wire. Princes and princesses were buried in these suits to preserve their immortality. They even went to far as to put 9 jade plugs in each of the 9 orifices of the body. Jade is technically called nephrite. For the living, jade was taken internally in the belief that it regenerated the body.

As far as the price, it really depends on the color of nephrite that you choose. There are very light (almost white) varieties to all shades of green to black nephrite in Wyoming. If you went to the Kobuk River in Alaska, you could find some of the largest deposits of good quality nephrite and I’m sure it would be much cheaper (supply and demand) there. I just went to a rock and mineral show in New York and I could have picked up a good size piece of jade for a ring for under $20.
