Can a person who hallucinates pursue a career in psychology?

After being in therapy for a while, and just being in a medical setting for numerous reasons, I’ve decided that I want to do the same that my doctors and therapists do for me. They’re really a great group of people. They’re not old and jaded and dull.
I want to help people.
I would like to be a psychologist one day. I find the human mind fascinating. I find psychology fascinating.
But…
Here’s the thing.
I’m still what you would consider “mentally unstable”.
If I take proper medication, it’s MOSTLY under control. Every so often, I’ll hallucinate. Every so often, I’ll feel depressed. Every so often, I’ll have that paranoid thought.

First off, you need to take our medication as prescribed. if it is not helping or you can’t handle the side effects tell your doctors. Before you can think about being able to chase your dreams of any kind you need to get yourself where you need to be.

That being said, you can be a psychologist, or almost anything else you choose. If anything your experience with mental illness will make you a better psychologist, becuase you can relate to your patients in ways that most psychologists can’t. While they have studied mental illness you will have not only studied it, but lived through it and you will know what it is like to struggle in ways people without mental illness can’t imagine. It gives you an authority that many other psychologists do not have. Don’t let anyone discourage. Sometimes people will treat you badly becuase of your illness, or tell you that you can’t do something. Don’t listen to them, work with your doctors, follow your therapy plans (especially medication use) and you can do anything you choose.
