Barracuda Stun Guns. New Product, Big Vision
In today’s society the need for personal security products is becoming more and more relevant. Of all of the choices of non-lethal self defense weapons, Barracuda Stun Guns stand alone for price, dependability, and customer service. Barracuda is the trade mark registered by Bret Harders, founder of Over The Counter Intelligence Inc located in Sparks, Nevada. I contacted Brett and asked him to send me some information on the company and his response impressed me so much that rather than pick out the high points, I thought I would just include it in this article. The following is the email that I recieved from Mr. Harders.
QUICK HISTORY OF OVER THE COUNTER INTELLIGENCE, INC AND BARRACUDA STUN GUNS
The business model for Over The Counter Intelligence, INC began in 1990 when I went into a “spy store” in midtown Manhattan. The store itself had this air of secrecy. It was fairly dark with blue neon lighting display cases with all sorts of products that looked as if they were taken right out of a James Bond Movie. Adding to this feeling was the lone salesman/owner who had a refined English accent and wore a pinstripe suit. Something inside me just clicked and I thought that if I every owned a store, it would be just like this. The name Over The Counter Intelligence was the first thing that came to me when I began creating this store in my mind. The seed that had been planted slowly grew until 1998 when it became a full time hobby for me. With the help of the Internet, I would research and sample the different types of “spy” products that were on the market at that time. For whatever reason, I just naturally gravitated to the self defense items over everything else. In 2003, the hobby turned into a part-time business. As sales people, we sell what we like and what I really came to like were stun guns. I felt that they were, and still are, the best form of non-lethal self defense. In 2005, my part time business became my full time business both online and off line. I would go to gun shows, swap meets; anywhere I could get these products in front of people. By this time, I was mainly concentrating on the self defense items and really pushing stun guns. What amazed me most was my customers lack of knowledge of stun guns in general. But once I was able to educate them and show them how they worked, the sale was easy. During all this time, I saw how stun guns were evolving, as all technology does as the demand for them increases. I saw them go from low voltage bulky devices to smaller, more compact units with increased voltage. By early 2006, stun guns had become the only item that I wanted to sell and at the same time, I was noticing that the overall quality of stun guns was deteriorating with a lot of generic low end, poor quality stun guns being introduced into the market. Putting the majority of my retail business on hold, I began what turned out to be a year long process to start Barracuda brand stun guns. Had I known how much work was involved in it, I would have thought twice. Coming from a retailer’s perspective, I based my wholesale business model on what I had always expected from a wholesaler: Quality, affordability and dependable customer service. In November of 2007, the first shipment of BC-12s, our first unit, arrived from China. From the success of the BC-12, we introduced the BC-18, a stronger version of the BC-12 and the BC-10, which was brought in due to the request of many of my retailers. The plans for Barracuda stun gun’s immediate future is to continue to add new models as well as our own design that we are currently working on.
PERSONAL BELIEFS/PHILOSOPHY ON STUN GUNS AND THE SELF DEFENSE INDUSTRY
As I mentioned above, quality, affordability and customer service is the corner stone on which I operate. Quality is number one. Without a quality product, no one will want it. If a product is not affordable, no one will buy it. And if your customer service is bad, no one will want to do business with you. Coming from the retail end and being knowledgeable about the consumer and market in general, has always played an important role in each decision we make.
When it comes to you, the retailer, there are two big obstacles to overcome when it comes to selling stun guns and self defense items in general. The first is that we are a reactionary society. We normally don’t prepare for the worst until it is too late. It is natural to not want to think of all the bad things that can happen so it is ultimately it is the retailer’s job to remind them that they do need to be prepared. The hardest part about selling stun guns is that the public is largely uneducated when it comes to them. Most people don’t know the difference between a stun gun and a TASER. It has been mine and other retailer’s experience that once the consumer gets a stun gun in their hands and is properly explained on how to use it, they buy them. As a wholesaler, I do feel that part of my job is to educate my retailers on Barracuda stun guns and stun guns in general and I am always happy to answer any questions they might have. The bottom line is that if you are not knowledgeable about any product, you probably won’t sell as many as the person who is. But beyond being knowledgeable about a product, I believe that you must be passionate and truly believe in it. Customers can tell if a salesperson is passionate about what they are selling and they can also tell if you are not. I believe that the stun gun and self defense industry in general is a growth industry with no bubble to burst. Only when there is no need for defending one’s self will our products no longer be of value.
It is this attitude towards customer service and product quality that has made Barracuda stun guns one of the hottest non-lethal self defense weapons on the market today. I am sure that if Mr. Harders continues to apply this sort of dedication and business philosophy to to his own design it will surely be a success.
Barracuda BC-10: This model is perfect for those who prefer the old style stun gun. The BC-10 combines old style appearance with new style technology for an amazing 1,000,000 Volts/1,000 kV of stopping power. This model is operated by two 9volt batteries. It contains an 80db alarm that works independently from the toggle trigger. It has a two position safety switch. Both the stun gun and alarm can be used separately or together. It has a safety/disable pin with a wrist loop. It has a belt clip that is attached to the gun and also comes with a nylon weave holster. The unit measures 6″x 2.5″x 1.25″, and comes with a full 5 year warranty.
Barracuda BC-12: The BC-12 is Barracudas first model and set the standard for what you have come to expect in a stun gun. They haven’t changed a thing because it hasn’t needed changing. This compact, rechargeable stun gun packs a whopping 1,200,000 Volts/1,200 kV and will definitely ruin your attackers’ day. This model features a long life NI-MH rechargeable battery with a built in wall charger. It has a safety switch with one touch operation and a red LED light that shows when the unit is powered up. This unit also comes with the safety/disable pin and a nylon weave holster. Its compact size, 3.75″x 2.25″x 1″ makes it easy to carry and conceal. It also comes with a full five year warranty.
Barracuda BC-18: It is identical to the BC-12 but with a lot more power. Delivering an unbelievable 1,800,000 Volts/1,800 kV, it is the premier of stun guns. Just the sound of it will give any attacker second thoughts.
