How much does gauge matter in navel piercings?
I have a somewhat recent navel piercing- about 4 months. I currently have a 12 gauge curved barbell that I got when I was pierced. I recently found a cute spiral-type thing, though, that’s 14 gauge. I would definitely treat it as a costume jewelry and only wear it for a few hours at a time, so would it affect the healing process? especially, would it make it more difficult to later reinsert my original barbell?
A 14 gauge is about 0.064 inches and a 12 gauge 0.081 inches, which is a fairly significant difference when comparing a 16 to a 14 – so there’s a good chance that if you leave the 14 in too long that the whole could shrink and make reinsertion of the 12 gauge slightly more difficult.
I would wait until the piercing is fully healed, and then you should safety be able to wear the 14 gauge for a few hours at a time without having an affect on the size of the hole – but, if you leave it in for a prolonged people the hole will shrink and reinserting the 12 gauge could result in some trauma to the piercing and potentially slightly tear the skin if you force it too hard.
