possible career fields? geology?
I am a geology major, and even though I am going into my second year of college, I was just wondering what type of jobs are out there. Sure, I could goto the “darkside” and work in an oil company, but I’d rather stay away from that. Eventually I would like to find something which would allow me to travel, and I could collect unique specimens. My dad’s old friend used to work in a mining environment and would travel to south africa and collect awesome gemstones… a job like that would be amazing. Im just curious to hear what everyone has to say, and if you have any recommendations. Thanks =)
When I got my BSc, I took as many different classes as I could, to broaden my knowledge base. I got out of school and landed a job right at away as a low-level engineering geologist. *Low-level!!!* You have to expect that you will be a grunt for a few years. A lot of my friends couldn’t handle that, thinking that they were somehow special because they had just graduated with a degree we/you are not.
Engineering geology is a great career.
I spent six months with my arms quite literally up to their elbows in mud in a soil laboratory that would never have passed OSHA standards. But I worked *hard* I worked *way* beyond what was asked of me… and I advanced very quickly. I’ve been running an entire department of the company for 12+ years now.
It’s a good job. I get to sleep in the same bed every night, my family doesn’t have to move around and we get to see each other all the time. Yeah, I get to work and travel anywhere from dead center of a city to doing some research out in the sticks (and back home that night). It has all sorts of other important sub-disciplines of geology That Are part of what I need to do everyday, from hydrogeology to geophysics and everything in between.
So:
(1) Learn as much as you can about every bit of geology, don’t try to focus on a sub-discipline in a BSc
(2) Know that jobs where you travel the world collecting interesting samples are just about zero in availability (and would bore me to death). Jobs in the petroleum industry aren’t all that available, either. Think about an genuinely commercially viable, marketable job interest.
(3) Know that whatever it is you do, you will *start at the bottom.* Accept this before you graduate, or you will be very unhappy.
